Nico Janssens accepted a position with MCB as a shift worker in the warehouse in mid-2006. He works day shifts, afternoon shifts and night shifts and is part of a permanent (30-man) team that works in different buildings.
The warehouse department is all about teamwork. Preparing the materials is the only thing you do on your own. We load the trolleys in groups of three or four people, under the supervision of the loading manager. I like alternating between working on your own and working with other people. The variety in terms of types of tasks also appeals to me. Sometimes you drive the forklift or the truck, and on other occasions you work the hoist. The work is not at all monotonous. A high level of accuracy and a sense of responsibility are the main requirements. The materials have to be complete and set out in the correct sequence. Any mistakes you make in that respect can cause problems for the customer. Loading requires a great deal of personal responsibility. Because you have to handle extremely heavy loads. Mistakes can lead to dangerous situations and all of the associated consequences. Which is something nobody wants on his conscience. So good teamwork is important, you have to be able to trust each other. And we do. Collaborating to do the job well is the basic attitude here. This is also due to the informal contacts we have with each other. MCB is a friendly company. Which means that all of those who work our shift make time for a party every now and then. Which strengthens our team spirit even more. In that respect, MCB is all about give and take. If you perform well, you can expect to be rewarded. The same applies at a personal level. I have said that I want to move up through the company. And the reaction is: ‘Show us that you can perform well in your current job and we will always look for opportunities’. If that isn't fair, what is?
