Merford has been a trusted name for over seventy years, providing solutions that reduce noise and ensure safety. Within the Special Doors division, doors are produced to withstand the most challenging conditions – from heavy industry to coastal areas where salt and moisture constantly test the material.
When Merford recently invested in a fully automated production line, a new challenge emerged. Automation requires consistent material quality and tight tolerances. Any deviation can disrupt the process. It was the perfect moment to critically review the raw materials that had been used for years. Galvanized steel met the basic requirements but did not provide the reliability and durability Merford needed for the future.
This led to the transition to Magnelis. This innovative steel, supplied by MCB, offered exactly the properties Merford was looking for. Not only is the quality consistent and predictable, but the lifespan is also significantly longer. While traditional galvanized materials are relatively quickly affected in aggressive environments such as C5 zones (e.g., offshore or coastal regions), Magnelis provides much better corrosion protection. This means more reliable doors and less maintenance for customers.
The benefits quickly became evident in practice. Products look better when left untreated, tools experience less wear, and the production line runs smoother thanks to consistent material properties. Additionally, Merford can rely on a stable supply chain. Together with MCB, agreements have been made regarding stock and delivery reliability, supported by multiple ArcelorMittal production sites. This provides peace of mind in a market where delivery security is not guaranteed.
For Rob van Hemert, Operational Manager at Merford, the choice is clear: “Switching to Magnelis is both a quality and sustainability upgrade for us.” Although the material is currently mainly used in special doors, Merford also sees opportunities in other product lines, such as noise control for heat pumps or offshore applications.
The collaboration between Merford and MCB goes beyond supply. It is a partnership centered on testing, sharing knowledge, and joint development. Together, the companies work on products that withstand the toughest conditions while being ready for the future.
