Product description

Ferritic stainless steel. Adding sulphur, which combines with manganese to form manganese sulphides, improves the material's machinability relative to 1.4016. The material is ideal for processing on automatic lathes. The addition of sulphur does however have an adverse effect on formability, the resistance to corrosion and weldability. The material is supplied in annealed condition from stock. Heat treatment is possible in principle. The heat treatment consists of austenitizing at approximately 1000 °C, followed by quenching in oil or air and tempering at approximately 600 °C. Due to the presence of manganese sulphides in the structure, this grade offers a slightly lower resistance to selective corrosion in particular than the 1.4016 grade. Consequently, it is only used when no specific requirements for corrosion resistance apply. Applications: screws, nuts, shafts, fittings and the like for household applications and non-corrosive industrial environments.
